PREVENT WATER THEFT…….

Have you ever noticed a spike in your water bill and can’t figure out why it got so high? Outdoor spigots are usually out-of-sight, out-of-mind, when you are not watching someone could be using your spigot to wash their car, water their yard of even fill up their pool. To make sure this does not happen to you, you can purchase a hose bibb lock. It is an attachment you can find at your local hardware store and it’s really easy to install. (And well worth the investment).

What is energy…….

Energy causes things to happen around us. Look out the window. During the day, the sun gives us light and heat energy. At night, street lamps use electrical energy to light our way. When a car drives by, it is being powered by gasoline, a type of stored energy. The food we eat contains energy. We use that energy to work and play.
The more we conserve energy the more we can do.

Solar screens work in 3 different ways….

1.Shading – the amount of shade created between the solar screens and the exterior pane of glass.
2.Reflectivity – reflecting the direct sun’s rays of light off of the screen, defusing the amount of direct sun’s rays in your home.
3.Absorption – the heat that is absorbed and held into the screen material itself and then dispersed back into the air away from the glass.

Compost or Mulch…………

What’s the difference?………
Do you know the difference between mulch and compost? Mulch and compost can be confused because sometimes the same materials are used for both.
It’s how the materials are used that makes all the difference.

1.Compost is organic waste that decomposes, forming a rich material that can improve the quality of soil. Adding compost to the soil improves drainage and increases nutrients.
2.Mulch is any material layered on top of the soil to prevent weeds from growing, help the soil hold moisture to help to keep the soil temperature more constant.

New Year’s Savings Tips…

The new year is the perfect time to evaluate your home’s energy usage and make a stronger commitment to lead a more energy-efficient lifestyle. Even though it’s not easy to keep the personal resolutions you pledge year to year, you can take some very simple measures to reduce home energy consumption all year long without a lot of effort. Once you make them a habit, saving energy will be second nature.

Watch out for build up: One of the easiest things to do is remove build-up in your clothes dryer’s lint trap before every load. Removing built up lint not only reduces the risk of fire but also will increase drying efficiency and could save you up to $34 per year. Also, consider consolidating loads, drying loads with similar fabrics together.

Keep your bills out of hot water: Identify-and fix-any water leaks in your home. Leaky faucets and showerheads, for example, can be a big source of waste. Repairing these fixtures can save you up to $100 per year. And, don’t forget to inspect your hot water heater for leakage. At a rate of one drip per second, your home can waste gallons of water in a short time, costing you money.

Seal the gaps: Air leaks can occur in some unusual and out-of-the-way places-crawl spaces, attics, overhangs, garages, porches and other architectural features, to name a few. Be sure to have a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® contractor investigate these problem areas and make recommendations on how to make your home’s openings air-tight. By sealing and insulating your home, you could increase your home’s energy efficiency by up to 20 percent.

Improve air flow: Rearranging your home furnishings can lead to year-round benefits. Organize your furniture and rugs away from registers and heating return vents. For optimal comfort, make sure the connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls and ceiling.

Christmas Safety…

Unplug the lights and decorations when you are not home, or when not in use. Heat + a pine tree = house fire. The lights could short out and start a fire. Real trees are highly flammable.

Turn off all lights when you go to bed.

Check each set of tree lights for frayed wires, broken bulbs, and loose connections.

Turn off lights before you go to bed or leave the house.

Never run electrical cords under carpets or rugs, over nails, in traffic areas, or where there is a chance of water.

Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.
Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use.

Check all tree lights-even if you’ve just purchased them-before hanging them on your tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.

Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.

From the staff at Solar Screens & More we wish everyone a wonderful and safe Holiday!
